Dobson receives students from Rhodes and Summit Academy. The Mustang serves as the school's mascot, and the school colours are royal blue and silver. Dobson, which first opened its doors in 1981, is situated on 84 acres (340,000 m2) of public property. The school is named for the Dobson family, who settled in the area in 1886 and built a vast ranch that includes the land on which the school now stands.

Dobson High School's goal is to provide comprehensive educational resources, professional teaching, and high expectations that will allow graduates to be active members of society. Learning, compassion, and legacy are all valued at Dobson. The Head-Heart-Horseshoe motif represents responsibility for understanding, mutual esteem, and leaving a legacy for the future.

It is a lively, energetic, and inclusive student body that reflects the society from which their students will graduate.

It was named a Blue Ribbon school for the 1986-87 school year. President Barack Obama delivered a speech at the school in 2009 in which he announced a mortgage relief scheme. On campus, two episodes of MTV's Made were filmed.

Gabrielle Buckley is the acting principal. The remainder of the administration is made up of four assistant principals: Adam Malik, Patrick Bass, Christina R. Sweador, and Scott Mohn. Their Advanced/Accelerated Program at Dobson allows students to take advantage of any or more of their advanced/accelerated classes.

Students take AP classes to train for the National Advanced Placement Examination, which is offered in the late spring of each academic year. Based on their success on these exams, students could be awarded advanced placement status and/or college credit.
